Winter is one of the most difficult times of the year to score a flat stomach and glass-cutting jawline that we all secretly crave. It makes sense. If you’re like me, and you’re living in a location that is so cold it makes you want to hide under your covers till summer time, it can be challenging to find the motivation to go on a morning jog unless you care to spend the waking hours of the day face planting into a pile of ice. Not exactly how most of us want to start the day, but to each their own right?
Let us not forget the fact that winter is packed with holidays that are designed for eating fatty foods that are not only traditional but comforting and mind-blowingly delicious as well. I don’t even celebrate Christmas, but I can’t go a single holiday season without stuffing my face with an entire village of gingerbread men. Even months after the holidays, snow on the ground has this odd effect of causing me to crave festive comfort foods like an oven-baked cookie and hot chocolate on the regular. Because of all this, winter time can cause us to put on some pounds that we can quickly get rid of if we put our minds to it! That said, here is a list of 15 different ways to stay fit in the winter:
1. Refrain From Eating Out Of Boredom
Being cooped up inside for so long from the cold weather can cause the days to get pretty dull. If you’re anything like me, you’ll spend your free time watching HBO shows on your laptop while going hard on a bag full of flaming hot Cheetos. It’s a fantastic way to unwind at the end of the day, and it takes absolutely zero effort to sit there and enjoy yourself. It is easy to want to eat out of boredom because food always makes things less dull.
When eating for pleasure, you’re usually not going to go for a fresh salad or kale chips. If you want to spice up the night, you’re more likely to reach for the s’mores flavored pop tarts. In order to put a rest to this unhealthy habit, try your best to change your attitude on eating in general. Instead of eating for fun, try eating for fuel. Eat when you are hungry, not when you want to add excitement to an experience such as vegging out on the couch.
2. Invest in Dumbbells
Dumbells are designed to be used while standing in one place, so there is no need to have even to leave your bedroom with these exercise tools! Buy a pair of dumbbells at least ten pounds each and start lifting from the comfort of your own home. Now I know what some of you ladies are thinking – you might assume that if you start lifting weights, you’re going to wake up one morning looking like Dwayne The Rock Johnson when you’re trying to channel Ariana Grande. Believe me, I used to think the same thing about lifting as a woman but let me tell you, the idea that you will get popeye bulky if you start doing repetitive bicep curls is a straight up myth, my friends!
What lifting weights does is it causes you to burn fat like nothing else. What I like to do when lifting weights with my dumbells is I like to start a new Netflix show and see if I can work out with my weights for an entire episode. It’s a productive way of watching TV, so it’s basically a win-win situation.
3. Go Up And Down The Stairs Repeatedly
This is my favorite cardio exercise of all time. Put on your headphones and blast some energetic hits while you go up and down your staircase from 30 mins-1 hour. You can start at a reasonable pace, slowly each time to increase your speed. I used to think runners high was a myth until I started to do this cardio exercise religiously. If you get bored listening to music while going up and down the stairs as part of your routine, you can always listen to stand up comedy. The mix of endorphins from the exercise and laughter is better than any high. Oh, and a tip, make sure you stretch before this one! You’ll thank me later.
You don’t even have to buy a bunch of Zumba DVDs or join a class because it’s the future and all you gotta do is look up “Zumba Workout” on Youtube. There are loads of videos that range from easy to so difficult you’ll be sweating like a tween girl via 2009 at a twilight screening.
5. Start The Day With A Hot Bowl Of Oatmeal
Hot foods are a must when the weather outside is frightful, so oatmeal is the perfect way to fill you up in the morning, so you’re less hungry throughout the day. Many studies show that eating oatmeal frequently as a breakfast meal has been linked to weight loss so why not add some blueberries and eat up? Just make sure you go for the real thing instead of the instant packaged stuff, as much as we all love the microwaveable dinosaur egg oatmeal a.k.a a staple of our youth. (Sigh).
6. Invest In A Jump Rope
Another great exercise you can do right in your bedroom is jumping rope! It’s one of the fastest ways to get your heart racing (even faster than when you see a picture pop up of Timothee Chalamet on your feed). Why not go back to your childhood recess roots and hop some rope?
7. Protein Powder
A great way to stay fit is to invest in protein powder. You can add it to your water as a meal replacement, and there are a variety of flavors that can make your bland water instantly taste like a good ol’ Jamba juice smoothie. It’s refreshing and designed to help you burn fat!
8. Start Counting Your Steps
Sometimes all you need to stay fit is to get up off your feet and start walking. We spend so much time sitting around in 2019, especially us with jobs that don’t require moving from your desk. People say that sitting is the new smoking, which is not far off. I downloaded an app recently called Pacer which is basically a free way to count your steps. I try to walk ten thousand steps a day. I’ll do this while listening to music, podcasts, and audiobooks to keep it interesting. Great way to catch on books while staying active!
9. Make H20 Your Best Friend
Already have a BFF? Dump them. Water is your new main hang. Keep it by your side all the time, tell it all your secrets if you have to. Add lemon in the glass for easier digestion and boujee vibes.
10. Don’t Be Afraid To Go Outside and Play
People think you have to be a kid or Anna/Elsa to build a snowman. This is just plain false, and going out to engage in snow activities can be even more fun as an adult. Grab some friends and have a snowball fight. Sometimes you need a change of pace from your grown-up routine, and this is the best way to do it!
11. Ease Up On The Booze
As fun as drinking can be on occasion, making it a habit is the easiest way to lead to weight gain. Adults sometimes believe that sitting around with your pals and drinking is the only way to get through the winter, but this is far from true. If you think you can muster it, try finding creative ways to have fun without relying on the calories!
12. Spice It Up In The Bedroom
Perhaps the most satisfying way to get your cardio on. Enough said, be safe kiddos.
13. Stock Your Fridge With Healthy Foods
Sometimes being surrounded by healthy foods is all you need to put you in the right mindset. Sacrificing those frozen chicken nugget dinners for a lean chicken and veggie meal is the right way to go, my friends!
14. Allow Yourself Cheat Days
People all have their own beliefs about cheat days, but I personally believe if you don’t allow yourself one day a week to indulge and live a little, you’re going to go nuts. Pick your day (I suggest the weekend) to reunite with your beloved tacos. Sometimes forbidden love is the most beautiful kind.
15. Trust Yourself
Sometimes the only thing you’re missing to get to your goal weight is some faith in yourself that you can do it. Stop being so hard on yourself! These things take some time. In the meantime, love yourself no matter your size because you are FLAWLESS no matter what!
