Anyone can have a bad day. Your alarm doesn’t go off, your coffee spills on your shirt, or you get into an argument with your significant other. Many different things can cause you to have a bad day. The good news is that you do not have to stay in a bad mood! You can turn around your bad day. Here are 13 ways to turn around a bad day.
Exercise is a great way to improve your mood and get your day back on track. Take a run, go for a bike ride, or even take a brisk walk. A study in the Journal of Cognition and Emotion found that only 30 minutes of exercise can positively impact your mood.
2. Be Generous
According to a study, “Pursuing Happiness: The Architecture of Sustainable Change,” doing good deeds increase happiness. Instead of sitting in your grumpy space, take the time to do an act of kindness. It may be as simple as buying coffee for an unsuspecting customer or raking your elderly neighbor’s leaves.
3. Practice Gratitude
Taking time to focus on what you are grateful for is a beautiful way to improve your attitude. Make a list of things you are thankful for, write a note to someone to tell them you are grateful for them or say a prayer of thanksgiving. Practicing gratitude takes your focus off of what is wrong and refocuses on what is good.
4. Get to the Source of your Bad Mood
Figure out why you are in a bad mood, to begin with. Are you tired, hungry or bored? Once you take the time to understand where your negativity is coming from, you can then work to change it.
5. Eat Something Healthy
We are what we eat. When we are hungry and fill up on junk food, our mood can be negatively impacted by a sugar crash. Making healthy food choices will help both your body and mind to feel better.
6. Wear Yellow
Yellow is associated with having a positive mood. According to a study published with BMC, the color yellow has a positive impact on your mood. When you are having a bad day, switch out your shirt for a yellow one and wait for your attitude to improve.
7. Talk to a Friend
The world of social media and texting can be lonely. Take the time to call or visit a friend. Talk to someone who loves you and values your relationship. A positive human connection can add value to your day and improve your mood.
Laughter produces endorphins which naturally enhances your mood. Seek out laughter when you are having a bad day. Watch a funny video, talk to a hilarious friend, or find funny memes. Just get to laughing and turn your day around.
9. Get Outside
Fresh air and sunshine will improve your bad mood. Sunlight naturally boosts serotonin levels which work to improve your mood. Taking the time to get outside can reset your entire day. Smell the flowers, go for a walk, and refresh your attitude.
Dancing is a mood enhancer. An article in Psychology Today states dancing can reverse depression and lower levels of stress hormones. Pull out your dancing shoes and get moving. Whether you dance in your living room or go to your favorite club, your day is sure to improve once you start dancing.
11. Turn Up the Music
Like with dancing, upbeat music can improve your mood. Turn on your favorite song and sing. Listening to music can change the rhythm of your day and get you out of your funk.
Practicing yoga is good for the mind, body, and spirit. Just like with another exercise, it will improve your mood. However, yoga offers the added benefit of centering your mind. Taking time to incorporate yoga into your daily routine may even keep you from having a bad day in the first place.
13. Accomplish a Task
If nothing else works to turn your mood around get productive. Don’t just sit there and pout. Take the time to check an annoying task off your list. Send thank you cards, take your clothes to the cleaners, or pick up the dog’s poop from the yard. At least if you are going to be in a bad mood, you can feel right about getting things done.
